Where are you from?

Glanmire, Cork.

Undergraduate Degree:
BSc in Pharmaceutical Science

Why did you choose to undertake an MSc in Computational Biology?

During my undergrad degree I realised that knowledge of computing is becoming an absolute requirement in the fast paced biology of today. The MSc appeared to be the perfecting offering to realise that.

Did you find it difficult to transition to computing?
At the beginning it was a lot to take in. However, as with most CIT courses, the class sizes are small so there was great contact with staff and plenty of hands on support provided. If you stick with it and are enthusiastic, it pays off and is very rewarding. The lecturers themselves are active researchers in this field so they themselves have already made the transition from their core discipline. It's motivating to see that it's possible to have the best of both worlds and a very unique skillset at the end of the programme.

Has the MSc in Computational Biology improved your career prospects?

The thesis component of my MSc was completed in Semester 3, onsite in GSK. Here I interfaced with engineers and software developers to design and implement an algorithm which improved the energy efficiency of the test plant. This wouldn't have been possible without the interdisciplinary skills which I obtained during the MSc.
